Is backgammon hard to learn?
No. You can learn enough to play in about ten minutes. Playing well is another matter, and that is much of the appeal. Here is what is easy, what is hard, and how to get over the first bumps.
The short answer
Backgammon is easy to learn and hard to master. All the rules fit on one printed page, and a beginner can finish a game on their first try. What takes years is judgement: knowing when to risk a hit, when to race, and what to do with the doubling cube.
What makes it easy
- One goal. Bring your 15 checkers home, then bear them off before your opponent does.
- One piece. Every checker moves the same way. There is nothing like chess's six kinds of piece.
- The dice choose your numbers. You only ever pick from the moves your roll allows, so a turn is rarely overwhelming.
- Games are short. A game takes about 10 to 20 minutes over a board, so you get plenty of practice.
- Beginners win games. Good dice can beat anyone on the night, so you get some wins while you learn.
What makes it hard
- A few rules trip people up. Mainly getting off the bar, having to play both dice, and bearing off. Nothing here is difficult, it just takes a few games to remember.
- Thinking in odds. Every decision weighs what could happen on the next roll. You learn to count shots rather than hoping.
- The doubling cube. Offering or accepting a double is a separate skill from moving, and the most expensive one to get wrong. See the doubling cube.
- Feedback is noisy. You can play well and lose to the dice, or play badly and win. It is hard to tell what you did right without a bot to check.
How long it takes
These are rough guides from what most players describe, not measurements:
| Stage | Time | What you learn |
|---|---|---|
| Your first game | Minutes | How checkers move, hitting, and getting home. Enough to play and enjoy it. |
| All the rules | A few games | The bar, doubles, bearing off, gammons. The app or a friend can catch your mistakes. |
| Good basic play | A few weeks of casual games | The best opening moves, which points to make, when to hit and when to run. |
| A strong club player | Years of regular play | Pip counting, the doubling cube, reading positions and match scores. |
| Mastery | Never quite finished | Even the best players still study with bots. |
Compared with chess
Backgammon is quicker to pick up. You will play a full and fairly sensible game long before a chess beginner stops losing pieces for nothing. Over a lifetime they are both deep, in different ways: chess rewards calculation, and backgammon rewards judging risk. More in backgammon vs chess.
The quickest way to learn
- Learn the setup and the moves. Set up the board and read how to play, ten minutes at most.
- Play against the computer on Easy. Backgammon Lounge only offers legal moves, so the rules teach themselves, with hints and undo when you want them.
- Learn the good opening moves. There are only 15 opening rolls, and knowing them gives you a good start in every game.
- Fix the common mistakes. Ten beginner mistakes cover most of what costs new players games.
- Add a plan. Read strategy and how to win, then move up to Medium.
- Add the cube last. Once the moves feel natural, start using the doubling cube and count pips.
Questions
Is backgammon hard to learn?
No. The rules are simple enough to fit on one page, and most people can play a full game within minutes of being shown. It is much harder to play well, which is why people stick with it for decades.
How long does it take to learn backgammon?
About ten minutes to learn how to move and play a first game, and a handful of games to pick up the remaining rules. Getting good takes much longer: expect a few weeks of casual play to reach sensible basic play, and years to become a strong player. These are rough guides, not measurements.
Is backgammon easier than chess?
Easier to start, yes. There are fewer rules, and the dice mean a beginner can beat a stronger player in a single game. Both take years to master.
What is the hardest part of backgammon?
For most people, the doubling cube and knowing when to take risks. Moving the checkers is simple. Weighing the chance of being hit against what you gain takes experience, and the cube adds a decision every turn.
Can kids learn backgammon?
Yes, if they can add two dice and count points on the board. It is good practice at both. Start without the doubling cube, and let them win a few.
Is backgammon a good game?
Many people think it is one of the best two-player games. A game is short, there is real skill and enough luck to keep it close, and there is a lot to learn if you want it.
